Problem with Video in Mavericks

I've been using Mavericks for a while now and there's been a problem which I suspect stems from this operating system. When I watch any type of video on my computer, .mp4, .avi, it lags for about 6-10 seconds every few minutes. This is so common that watching movies or any type of long video is just, really really annoying.


I have a MacBook Pro bought in 2011, and running the latest version of Mavericks. I have 4gb RAM.
