What causes a blank list when I select application on my finder screen?

I have been able to use this function satisfacturally in the most recent past. Suddenly, so it seems, I'm unable to complete a simple scanning process using my wireless HP 7500 e910 to complete this proces. All I need it to do is scan a document and post it on the desktop so I'm able to attach it to an email. The plateform presented to me now when I need to scan from this printer, is one I've not seen before this morning? It appears to scan the document in several sectons (?) and I don't recognize how this works because it doesn't send the document to the desktop?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Sorry, but your issue does not appear to be related to Apple networking. Instead it seems to be related to troubleshooting the scan function of your HP printer or the scanning software itself.

I would recommend that you review the scanning troubleshooting section of the user manual for this printer. You may also find posting your issue to the HP support forum may offer better chances of getting a solution.

You're probably correct with this answer. I only thought that it might be something having to do with apple networking because, when I select 'applications' or documents or any other from finder, there is nothing to be selected (how does that happen?) The only selection that responds is 'desktop'. I still can't figure that out. Thanks for your help with this issue anyway.

By "finder" I am assuming that you are referring to the OS X Finder application ... correct?

When you are selecting Applications or Documents are you referring to the same named folder objects on the OS X Dock? Note: I changed mine to appear as folders. Yours may look different. (see image below)

Mine does look different, I haven't changed it to appear any differently than presented from the 'Finder' icon at the bottom of the desktop screen. Matter of fact, this is the very first time I've this type of problem. Its been working fine until this morning. I'm assumning too, that if you made a selection from the way you have your finder folders, you'd open it (them) and see selection for whatever you have placed in them. With me, and this situation, I find nothing in them? They are blank?

That is correct! When opening these Dock folders they are numerous icons to select from.

Unfortunately, what you are seeing is not an Apple networking issue, but relates more to the OS X operating system. I assume that you have already tried restarting your computer and still have the same results ... correct?

If that is the case, I would suggest that you create a new user; log-off your current user account, and then, log in with the new user account. If the problem no longer exists with the new user account, then your account may be corrupted. If it still exists with the new account then there is something amiss with your OS X installation. If that is the case, I would suggest that you post in one of the OS X forum areas.

It appears what you suggested worked perfectly. I am now able to check out everything as before. Thank you for your help with this issue. I was getting pretty upset, then came you! Have a wonderful 'New Year' too!
