Connecting to a wired home network through BT home hub 4 and unmanaged network switch

I have a BT home hub 4,a TPLink unmanaged network switch and a number of pieces of hardware inc an iMac which I want to connect to the internet (and each other) via Ethernet as I have cabling throughout. My iMac does not connect to the network but recognises the Ethernet connection. Any tips please?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), iOS 7

Been trying no dhcp from the hub and dchp with manual address on the iMac but can't connect at all, perhaps I need to manually set the hub settings better but not sure how - or do I need complete manual settings on the iMac?

This is not a Mac issue. Something is wrong with the cabling, or the switch, or the router, or the router's configuration.
