A fake message blocked my safari. I did a complete shutdown and restart and there is no problem with safari but how can I check no virus has become a part of the laptop, and remove it if it has?

Unless you actually installed something, or clicked on a link, you are quite safe.
It's not a virus. Next time, do as follows.
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
There is no malware of any kind involved with this. It's just a web-based scam, caused by a malicious JavaScript that tries to make it look like your browser has been locked. Once you've gotten rid of that scam window, you're fine.

The same thing has happened to me but I can't get rid of the scam pop up - Safari won't let me click on Preferences and also is blocking my computer from shutting down.

Quit Safari, then hold down the shift key while opening Safari to prevent it from re-loading the troublesome page. Then don't go back to the site that caused it.

Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

Not if you're not willing to read the solutions that have already been given.
I had tried all the above suggestions. However none fixed the problem completely. It wasn't until I attempted quiting safari via the apple sign and using various other tips that I finally fixed it.

do a soft reboot worked for me, remeber to clear all of your internet history , cache, cookies ect after 🙂
once ive got rid of it using safari- preferences - security and removing all website data and following all the steps as mentioned above, will the virus be completely eliminated from my mac forever? is there anything i can do to not get the virus again?
It's just a scam, happened to me yesterday and I called the police to ask and they said it's not a virus. If you force quit the safari wait 10 seconds press and hold **** key and open safari again. That's it worked for me.
