Q: just purchased the iphone 5c, I did a manual back up of my iphone 4 earlier in itunes. Now itunes is asking for a password to restore the back up, which I was never prompted to create. How can I restore the back up?

Can anyone help

If iTunes is asking for a password for that backup, then a password WAS created at some point, whether you remember it or not.
Try creating a totally new backup of the old iPhone, either to iTunes or iCloud, and then restore from that backup.
