Netflix won't stream via HDMI to non Apple TV

BBC Iplayer , YouTube and other streaming sources easily stream content via the correct HDMI cable adaptor direct from an iPad2 to a non Apple TV with an HDMI port . But Netflix won't and some others won't either. The glitch appears to be that "airplay mirroring " needs to be turned off in the IOS ( that is the Netflix fix) but you can't turn it if because it only appears as on option on the control panel when the iPad sees another suitable Apple device to mirror to. As far as it is concerned its on its own in a great big non apple desert.
