If I sync my ipad contacts with my icloud will it add the additional contacts on the ipad or delete them? Does it make any difference if the ipad has a different email account?

Can I sync my ipad with the cloud and keep my contacts as is? What happens if the contacts on my ipad were originally on an outlook email account I no longer have?
