My headphones won't fit into the jack in my Mac Mini. Do I need a special type of adapter?

Hi, I would like to plug my headphones into my Mac Mini, but they don't fit. I have tried many different types and brands of headphones, but nothing works. Do I need a special type of headphone or a special adapter or something? Or was it an error in building the product? I'd really like the help soon, thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I did some more reading and others said to push harder when people ran into this problem on the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. I tried it and it worked, although I was very nervous about doing so. If anyone else seems to have this problem where your headphones don't want to go in all the way, just push harder and it will work fine!

It was just was just really odd, seeing as I have never experianced an issue like this before. (and believe me, I have went through a LOT of products)
