Black border has appeared on either side of my brand new mac book pro screen

After saving and quitting sims 3 for some reason a black border has appeared perminently on either side of my screen, much like the black border that appears when you play Sims 3. This has made the screen much smaller and I have tried restarting it and shutting it down but it doesnt appear to be working. Is there anyway i can fix this myself?
