Differentiate VIP on iPhones

I am trying to setup VIP on email on my phone (4s) and my wife's phone (5s). Anytime I make switch on one, it changes the other. How can I make it so we each have different VIP settings? We use same apple ID on phones, is that why? Is there easy fix?
