Q: Problems upgrading to Mavericks

Hello - I am attempting to upgrade to Mavericks 10.9.1 but have run into a major roadblock.  I have downloaded the file three or four times and have tried this on numberous occassions in the past two weeks with no luck.  The only way I can open the computer after being udated is in Safeboot mode.  When I attempt to open it normally, I get a grey screen with lots of numbers and mistakes and then it recycles off and on again - with the same result.  Here is the error that keeps getting sent to Apple:

I can (and have) return to my current operating system, 10.8.5, because I have a cloned drive that I made with SuperDuper, but I would love to figure out why I cannot get my computer to update.  One note, when using it in Safebbot mode, the screens have this hurky jurky motion as I drag windows around - and they flash at me a lot.  When running in 10.8.5, smooth as glass. They are Apple 30" and 23" Cinema screens.

I have a big MOTU audio recording system attached to the computer, but I cannot run it without that - that's my bread and butter.

Any thoughts as to how to make this work?  I own and have run TechTool 7 - optimized the rive.  It's defragmented, running smooth as far as I can tell.

Please help me bring in the New Year with a working system!

Thanks.

The only way I can open the computer after being udated is in Safeboot mode.

This would indicate the kernel panics are due to the software associated with one of the following drivers. Uninstall the software associated with each one at a time until you can no longer recreate the kernel panic. Do so according to the developer''s instructions:

    com.uaudio.driver.UAFWAudio          4.1.1 16344

    com.musiclab.driver.molcp3          3.3.9

    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiDal          9.0.6f4

    com.motu.driver.USBMidiKext          1.6 58373

    com.motu.driver.PCIAudio

I have a big MOTU audio recording system attached to the computer, but I cannot run it without that - that's my bread and butter.

If this turns out to be the issue, you may have to.

I own and have run TechTool 7 - optimized the rive.

There is no need to defragment a journaled file system (a Mac running OSX) and no need to use this software.

One note, when using it in Safebbot mode, the screens have this hurky jurky motion as I drag windows around - and they flash at me a lot

This is normal. Only the essential graphics drivers are loaded.

HI - I have been working really hard at removing everything you suggested but I cannot find a few of the potential conflicts - and I have searhed the web to see if methods exist to find and delete them - no luck.  I have deleted all of the uaudio drivers - gone. I cannot find:

    com.muscilab.driver.molcp3   3.3.9

    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiDal   9.0.6f4

One of the instructions I found says to go to Users/Library  but I cannto figure out how to do this.  I saw the option button under the GO heading but it didn't seem to take me to that specific Library.  All the companies are obviously closed today - any suggestions as to an alternative path to finding these pieces?

    Thanks.

So - after days of research and following many, many threads - I found every piece of errant code and removed it.  I was able to open up in Maverixks.  I am no in the process of reconstituting my important software.  So far, I have the MOTU and the Uaudio plugins working - still running fine.  I will report when I have ti all back.  Thanks to nbar for pointing out the offending pieces of code.  It seems like these small strings of code were leftover from old software that had been updated many times but somehow, left behind these bits and pieces that screwed with Mavericks.  I now have some idea of what to look for when reviewing these error reports.

    Happy New Year indeed!

You're welcome. The only way to properly uninstall software is to do so according to the developer's instructions. I don't recommend manually unloading/removing kernel extensions at all. If these extensions have dependencies, you can crash your system. You must drack down the developer/developer's website for instructions on proper uninstallation of the remaining third party extensions.

Here is more information on kernel panics and third party kernel extensions:
