When I transfer files from 1 mac to another mac do I lose the file on the old mac

Just bought a new mac book pro. When it asks me to transfer files from my old macbook pro, Does that mean I will lose the files on my old mac book pro?

No, you won't. Copies of them should be on a different drive anyway.
