Random group texts from strangers.

I didn't know where else to post this, so I appologize if it doesn't belong here. My question or problem, is that I recieved a random group message from some unknow person. Two of the recipients of this text where my friends, so I thinking it might be someone they know. Then i got another text from someone i did not know saying that I had texted them and that they didn't know me. So what is going on? Has my phone been hacked some how? or what is going on?

Thanks

iPhone 5

Happened to us today as well, mixed iPhone (4) and Android (1). Happened twice on the same thread to two different random other people. This is a serious bug somewhere. Not sure what to do, but assume it is a mix problem, so we are avoiding any group messages that include the Android phone. But how do we know when it gets fixed?

This has happened to me twice in one week. The first was a group of three (two friends and me). Both of my friends have Android devices and I have an iPhone. The second incident was yesterday with a group of four, two iPhones and two Androids. I can't say whether it is iPhone or Android based, but it seemed to be the text message that I sent to the group that prompted the (wrong number) return texts. Both people were good about it, but a little amused and confused on how they were added to our convo. I hope that it's not happening in other group messages of mine where people are just reading and lurking. This doesn't seem to be a common thing yet, but I can't discount two happenings in one week.

Hard to narrow down an occasional bug, but we discovered that this happened a few days after an update to one of the iPhones. The random added recipient occurred with the first group message with an image, sent from that updated phone to the mixed iPhone/Android group. Might be a red herring, but that is what happened.

That same thing is happening to me. I'm in a group with my two brothers and our dad, we all have iPhones but my dad, who is 60 and isn't the best with his phone, has been having issues with his iMessage so the messages are all going through as SMS. We got a text from a random number saying that they have been getting our texts, and asked politely to remove them from the group, but the number is not listed in our group list. I apologized, made a new group, and they said they were still receiving the texts. I'm completely lost on how this is possible, and it is a little scary. It's a good thing the person on the other end was a decent human and made us aware they were getting our messages, because we were discussing an upcoming vacation, including hotel locations.

Necro, but I have a similar issue- sometimes the group chat my buddies and I are in will randomly include some other number. Eventually it stops happening.

Each time it has happened has been a different number, and it has happened four or five times.

1- Did you ever resolve this?

2- What carrier are you using?

3- The friends you chat with- what carrier are they using? Are the messages imessage or SMS?
