Is it possible ( and if yes how ) to set-up in Maverik Server a user who uses both a desktop Mac whilst in the office

but when on the road his MacBook ?

To make it a bit more complicated: not all of his home folders/files should be synced, only the documents folder ( and its contents ).

How would I do this.

The Apple support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5338 is only covering a complete migration.

Any help / guidance is more then appreciated.

Set up a mobile user — traditionally known as a portable home directory — and allow the user's files to be synched both to the desktop Mac and to the MacBook. For a quick overview: OS X Mavericks: Create and configure mobile accounts.

Excluding folders from the synch is available via in the synch preferences on the client.

Here is a Lion Server write-up, and Workgroup Manager is a separate download for Mavericks Server.

MrHoffman

one more question.

In the meantime I have set everything up:

- created one user with his home folder on the server

- bound both the iMac as well as the laptop and

- enrolled both machines.

So far so good.

Now my question: before I set-up in the profile manager the "Mobility" settings and push them to the machines:

I only want to sync one directory ( "Documents" ). Whilst I know where to do that ( Systems settings / Users )

I want to make that only the current contents of the "Documents" folder on the iMac is been synced to the server

and then from the server to the Macbook ( obviously when connected using the same user ID as on the iMac ! ).

Do I have to do that in the sequence described ?

In the docs folder of the MacBook I have files which are copies of what is currently on the Macbook, with the

latest version on the iMac. Shall I, just in case, delete the contents of the MacBook docs folder before syncing ?

Thanks in advance

No local experience with enabling this with active user directories; with directory contents that should not and cannot be scrapped. I copy user contents into the new environment, which also forces / causes the ownerships to be correct. If you do go that route and do plan to try to merge an active user directory into the portable home directory environment, definitely keep backups.
