I can not access my hotmail.com emails from any Apple devices

hi everyone, i'm hoping someone might be able to help me as I'm at my wits end. I lost access to my hotmail.com emails last month (not sure when exactly but sometime in December) when I noticed that I couldnt retreive or send any emails from any of my apple products i.e. iphone5/ipad/mac air/mac pro - I receive an alert that says mail can't connect to the acount 'hotmail.com' - no matter how many times I re-enter the password it will still not connect. I have checked all the settings and deleted, then added the account several hundred times and am now lost. The Hotmail account is accessible via browser as normals and no details have been changed. I have checked all the forums for both apple and MS and there is nothing that is obviuos to me that is causing the issue + affecting other users...(which is more frustrating than anything else).

any advise welcomed

This worked for me:

1) Delete the hotmail account from your iphone

2) Login to hotmail via the web (I used a different computer).

3) choose Options > general > mobile devices

4) Find your phone and delete it from the list - this will stop hotmail from trying to sync with the disconnected phone.

5) Re-add the hotmail account to your iPhone

i lost access to my hotmail account on my iphone but i could access it everywhere else without issue. i remembered that a month back or so i had to use a single sign on for microsoft hotmail access. so the issues was i shouldnt have entered my hotmail password-- for some reason it now recorded - i went onto my computer- logged onto the hotmail-- chose the single sign on code-- and then i went back on my phone-- entered the single sign on code and it worked.

Did you find out what to do? For several months, now, I have had trouble using Mail. Message always is that Mail cannot access my hotmail account. Unfortunately, my One-to-One membership has expired, so I am looking to the community for help.

I have to access my emails via Outlook on the internet. When I did this the first time, I was told that someone was using my account. I had to change my password.

I didnt get it sorted, i had to change my accounts to outlook.com and put an auto-fwd from old too new account. It has something to do with the single sign on code as SVuxen mentions above but I couldnt get all my mac devices working on it so found it easier to change to new account....

I went into an Apple shop to discuss with them as my partner was having hte same issue (we were buying anouther ipad) and they couldnt help much either.....so I gave up a did the same with her account and fortunately everything has migrsted across without any problems (including contacts/calaenders etc)

HI, I have been having the same problem, it's due to hotmail upgrading there security measures with this new thing called "2 step variation". If you have set up one of these then you need to turn it off buy logging in to your hotmail, security and password, then turn off 2 step variation. this worked for me on my iPhone 5s and iPad. I was locked out after setting up 2 step variation on my apple devises, not sure how it conflicts with them but it worked for me. Hope this helped.

I have the same issue on my iPhone. I got Microsoft security emails and messages multiple times and set up 2-step verification, all seemed OK, then this morning, when I open Mail on my iPhone, my hotmail account is no longer visible. If I go in the settings, all seems OK, I've even deleted and added the account again but I can't see it in the Mail app. Did anyone find a solution?

You do have to sacrifice 2-step verification to get hotmail on your phone. You need to set up an App password. An app password is a password provided by Microsoft that only your phone can use. You do not have to remember it or save it, just use the provided password when setting up your account on your phone. If for some reason you need to re-set your account, you can simply ask for a new app password.

From your Microsoft account go to "Security & Privacy", then "More security settings".

Then Scroll down to App passwords. You will see the follwing

App passwords

Some apps and devices (such as Xbox 360, Windows Phone, or mail apps on your other devices) don't support security codes for two-step verification. In these cases, you need to create an app password to sign in. Learn more about app passwords.

Follow the instructions found at this link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/app-passwords-two-step-verification

App passwords and two-step verification

After you've turned on two-step verification, some apps (like the mail apps on some phones) or devices (like an Xbox 360 or Windows Phone) will show an incorrect password error because they can't prompt you to enter a security code when you try to sign in.

If you've turned on two-step verification and you see an incorrect password error with an app or device, you'll need to get and enter a unique app password to sign in. Once you've signed in with your app password, you're all set to use that app or device. You'll need to create and sign in with a new app password for each app or device that can't prompt you for a security code.

The steps for generating a new app password are always the same:

  1. Go to the Security settings page, and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. Under App passwords, tap or click Create a new app password.A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.
  3. Enter this app password where you would enter your normal password.Repeat these steps to get a different password for every app or device that needs an app password.

The way you enter an app password can be slightly different, however, depending on the app or device you're trying to sign in to. Several of the most common ones are listed here. Tap or click the ones that apply to you.
