IPhone 5 home button is suddenly unresponsive after 1 yr and 3 months.

I have tried to recalibrate the home button, but unresponsiveness is recurring. I've tried cleaning around the home button, even though the problem isn't with it sticking--it depresses and releases without issue. It's very frustrating because it impacts overall use of the phone. Any ideas? (It goes without saying, but the phone is out of the warranty period and I did not purchase apple care).
