I see a file titled SocketLog.txt on the top level of my Mac HD.

It was there in Mountain Lion, and I upgraded to Mavericks and it remains.

There was another file mach_kernel, but I ran the Terminal command:

sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel

and it went back to it's hidden state.

Looking back with Time Machine, I can see that both files were not there around Sept/October 2013.

I can not find any information online regarding the SocketLog.txt file.

When I opn it with Text Edit it says:

STARTING

/Volumes/Macintosh HD/private/tmp/rcsdisksendreceive

12:17:23 PM

CONNECTED.

If I move it anywhere, it returns instantly to the top level of the Mac HD.

Any Help?

I has nothing to do with OS X.

All I could find googling was a java logging utility.

You'll have to figure out what program is writing the file and remove that.

Thank you Barney. I have jDownloader2 installed. It is a Java based program.

At least you have me pointed in the right direction.

It says I have ownership of the file, but it will not let me move or delete it.

You are normally prevented from moving things out of the root of the hard drive, but if you are an admin user, you should be able to authenticate to delete it.

I was able to delete the file with no side effects.
