I was recently helping a friend update their Mac to 10.9 from 10.6, and it appeared that they could download iWork for free. I updated my iMac 10.8 to 10.9 three days after Mavericks was released, and I can't figure out how - or even if - I can get the iWork suite for free.

iWork is free in two circumstances.
1. If someone has bought a new Mac, starting on 1 OCT 2013.
2. If someone already had the previous version of iWork installed on their Mac and updated to OS X Mavericks.

My friend didn't meet either of those conditions, which is confusing. Would demo models of iWork count?
