Spotlight continually re-indexing

My iMac spends a great deal of time indexing Spotlight, especially when I start it up. It often estimates many hours of indexing though it rarely lasts that long. However, it slows my system down badly. It seems that Spotlight is losing track of the indexing that has occurred so it starts it all over again. How can I get this working correctly?
