How to assign loop to MIDI in GB10

In the old versions you could add a custom sample by importing a sound file to the time line then going to edit>add to loop library, then open musical typing and assign samples to individual keys.

How do I do this in the new GB10? I'm trying to play an audio file from a midi imput, how do I assign it? If I'm not being clear let me know and I'll try to explain it another way.

I'm finding a loss of a lot of critical functionality in the new GB10, the enhancements are very cool but some of the things lost are DAW standards...and there are a lot of weird bugs and it runs over-all crashy. And this is on a brand new (less than a month) 2.3Ghz Mac Mini....

Dude, this doesn't even work. You can't drag an audio event from the time line onto the musical typing window. You just get a (/) no sign and you can see the event being dragged to other tracks behind the virtual keyboard.

In the versions where this technique worked you had to drag samples from the loop browser window and it never mattered what sound effect your software instrument was set to, it was just a good practice to assign the sample to keys that were unused.

If this is another missing feature I'd just like to know for sure so I can move on and probably start using a different DAW.

You have to have a Sound Effects Instrument selected. Did you select such an instrument?

Can it be, that you uninstalled your GarageBand '11 when you upgraded to GarageBand 10.0? Then the Sound Effects Instrument has probably gone.

The sound effect instrument was part of the regular set of instruments, that came with GarageBand '11. Check, if it is still in your Instruments Library - if you still have the Sound Effects Instrument installed:

Select your system drive in the Finder and follow this path - open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", etc ...

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Software/Sound Effects/

Do you still have any Sound Effect instruments at all? If not, check your Time Machine backup, if they are still there and rstore them to the folder

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Software/Sound Effects/

I have mainstage so I have all the sounds installed.

What you need are the GarageBand '11 Sound Effects Instrument, not the Logic or Main Stage version, they have fixed sets of sounds and cannot be overwritten.:

Legacy > GarageBand > Sound Effects>Radio Sounds

Only that one will let you drag sounds to the keys. You will recognize the keys that have sounds by the speaker icon on the key:

You are welcome. Enjoy your music 😀

What in the world was apple thinking?? LOL

I hope Apple will bring the sound effects instrument back, with other missing features, just like they promised to brint the missing features back to the iWork apps (About the new iWork for Mac: Features and compatibility).

It would not hurt to send plenty of feedback to Apple, to let them know, which missing features are considered to be essential by the users. Apple - GarageBand Mac- Feedback
