trying to update my new macbook air and dont know what to do

i just recently got a macbook air for christmas. i dont know where to find out what it has for an OS X update but i know its not very recent. when i try to update it to the most recent update it says i have to update it to a previous update. so i do that and it tells me the same thing. can someone please help me..
