File will not open nor move to trash, and unexpectedly closes finder

I downloaded a file and saved it in my movies folder on my mac book pro. When i click on the movies folder in finer it will automatically close finder down. If i search for the folder that i downloaded it appears but will not move to trash nor open, instead if clicked on or dragged to trash or to the desk top it forces the finder and/or trash to close.

I am using version 10.7.5

Thanks

MacBook Pro

ezjay08,

from within Finder, press Command-Shift-U to open the Utilities folder, and run Terminal.app there. In the Terminal window, type the word file followed by a space, but don’t press the Return key yet. From Finder, select the Movies folder from its Favorites sidebar, click and hold that downloaded file, and drag the file to the Terminal window; when you release the hold, it will display the path of that downloaded file. Now press the Return key in the Terminal window. The file command will display some output in that window; please include that output in your reply.

ezjay08,

OK, so to clarify what you’d stated originally, what you’d downloaded was a folder rather than a file. As an experiment, I created a folder of the same name on my MacBook Pro, and it had no effect on my Finder. However, I’m running Mavericks (10.9.1) rather than Lion (10.7.5).

Next, enter the following commands in Terminal, one line at a time:

cd ~/erinjayne/Movies

ls -ld '******* Presents Bad Grandpa TS XviD MP3 MiLLENiUM'

cd '******* Presents Bad Grandpa TS XviD MP3 MiLLENiUM'

ls -l

file *

Again, please include the output from these commands in your reply.

ezjay08,

at this point, my guess is that there’s some sort of non-visible character in that downloaded folder name. Try these commands next in Terminal:

cd ~erinjayne/Movies

ls -ldB *Grandpa*

If there is a non-visible character in that name, the B option in the ls command should show it (unless a non-visible character is within the word “Grandpa”).

ezjay08,

OK, now I understand — this is the Apple forum software affecting the display of the folder name. The seven asterisks that are shown at the start of the folder name are actually “Jackpass” without the “p”, so to speak. Try these commands instead:

cd ~erinjayne/Movies/Jack*MiLLENiUM

ls -l

file *

This should show information on the files within the folder.

ezjay08,

this is showing that there are no files within the downloaded folder — at least, no files that aren’t hidden. If this is the case, then you have no need to keep the folder. Try these commands to delete the folder:

cd ~erinjayne/Movies

rmdir Jack*MiLLENiUM

If there are any files within the folder, then a “Directory not empty” message will be displayed, and the folder will not be deleted. If there are no files in the folder, then the folder will be deleted with no message displayed.
