Trying to understand PROJECTS in 10.1, can someone please help?

I just recently broke down and switched from FCP 4-7. I have waited to download and install 10.1 - I always wait.

That said, I have a couple of questions... Why do you need so many Projects? When I create a project, it is a means to an end - a master file "movie" (which I put into storage so I can later make other iterations of it using QT Pro &/or MpegStream Clip. Then I delete the projects and put some of the best clips in deep storage. Done. I use the coolness of Mac's unix-face, i.e., the Finder to manage Movie storage as opposed to doing it inside of an app that hobbles the power of the OS.

Why don't you "save" master files and if need be open those in FCP X each time you wanna fiddle with 'em? Why save Project Files once the deed is done? I just don't get it. What you are doing is like saving Word Projects inside of Word, creating .docs and - what? Losing them too? Break it down for me, like you are talking to a child... because I really wanna know why so many use "apps" to file manage as opposed to the OS.

Yep, I gorcha. Still, my point is to make a master file Movie, save it seperate. One can always import it into the app and work on it with the original clips stored in the fridge. Point is, your situation is what it is. Since so many are having very similar issues, it will be no time al all until someone makes a 3rd party add-on for shuffling the deck.

I was hoping to persuade you to change your workflow to move on in a sane way from here. I recall a thread where folks were control clicking on the Library created by the upgrade, /show package contents to recover projects, no? It works when doing it on Iphoto Library.

The only other option that you have is to try to persuade APPLE to give you a link to the old version so you can re-order your world. ( I have 10.9 zipped and stashed for when I get done with this 2 hrs of multicam Projects - just in case.) But I am waiting.

rt. click on (in the Finder) Library, show package contents, copy & paste all your projects to another drive and re-oder... ??

If you want to Save a Project and come back to edit it later, right click the Project icon and select Duplicate Project as Snapshot.

This is different to Duplicate Project.

It allows you to come back and start editing from the point the Snapshot was created even if the original Project has been altered,

Maybe think "Save AS" if we are talking Word Processing.

And yes the Snapshot is a small file replicating the decision list rather than duplication real media files.

What you need to do is forget how you used to think about and use Events and Projects. Libraries give us "more" options for media management. Projects always had a Default Event. The connection is just more solid now. Simply re-think your management. If you're working on one production, and have 900 events, something is wrong with your media management plan. Rethink how your organizing. Maybe fewer Events, more Keyword/Smart Search collections.

Most all of the member in my local FCP users group, once they wrap their heads around what a Library is, are actually liking it better now.

1. Dailies go in events

2. You don't organize in projects. You edit in projects. Learn how to organize in FCP.

3. A master file is a finished movie ready for delivery. It is not an organizing or editing tool.

You do not understand the basics. You need to get some training.
