Trying to understand PROJECTS in 10.1, can someone please help?

Rebuilding Final Cut Pro X around an Aperture-like self-contained database is a great concept, I love it. I already notice faster performance as a result and moving libraries around many drives is very convenient.

However there's one MASSIVE ISSUE that I'm experiencing that I don't know how to navigate around. It's quite simple really:

Projects used to be viewable all at once in the Project Library, however now Projects live INSIDE the Events, which are in turn INSIDE Libraries. The only way to view a project is to select the LIBRARY > EVENT > SCROLL UP IN CLIP WINDOW > PROJECTS like so:

User uploaded file

User uploaded file

User uploaded file

So my two curious questions are:

1. HOW THE **** DO YOU VIEW ALL THE PROJECTS AT ONCE?

2. HOW THE **** DO YOU VIEW ALL THE PROJECTS AT ONCE IF YOU HAVE 430 LIBRARIES AND 900 EVENTS?

Well, I'm sure I'm just missing something VERY obvious here. Any help would be awesomely appreciated! : )

I just recently broke down and switched from FCP 4-7. I have waited to download and install 10.1 - I always wait.

That said, I have a couple of questions... Why do you need so many Projects? When I create a project, it is a means to an end - a master file "movie" (which I put into storage so I can later make other iterations of it using QT Pro &/or MpegStream Clip. Then I delete the projects and put some of the best clips in deep storage. Done. I use the coolness of Mac's unix-face, i.e., the Finder to manage Movie storage as opposed to doing it inside of an app that hobbles the power of the OS.

Why don't you "save" master files and if need be open those in FCP X each time you wanna fiddle with 'em? Why save Project Files once the deed is done? I just don't get it. What you are doing is like saving Word Projects inside of Word, creating .docs and - what? Losing them too? Break it down for me, like you are talking to a child... because I really wanna know why so many use "apps" to file manage as opposed to the OS.

Let's use your Word document analaogy, it's a good one.

Your approach is to create every chapter of a book in one single word document and then export it to PDF when you're done and trash the word document. I'd like to keep all the word documents for every video I create, so that at any point I can re-open that document (or workspace) and move clips around.

At the moment you can only store Word documents three folders down. You can't view all the Word documents in one folder. Not even if you build a smart folder.

Yep, I gorcha. Still, my point is to make a master file Movie, save it seperate. One can always import it into the app and work on it with the original clips stored in the fridge. Point is, your situation is what it is. Since so many are having very similar issues, it will be no time al all until someone makes a 3rd party add-on for shuffling the deck.

I was hoping to persuade you to change your workflow to move on in a sane way from here. I recall a thread where folks were control clicking on the Library created by the upgrade, /show package contents to recover projects, no? It works when doing it on Iphoto Library.

The only other option that you have is to try to persuade APPLE to give you a link to the old version so you can re-order your world. ( I have 10.9 zipped and stashed for when I get done with this 2 hrs of multicam Projects - just in case.) But I am waiting.

Good Luck...

Since this is my first experience with anything Final Cut Pro I appreciate your thoughtful response, but let me see if I understand.

You're saying to:

1. Organize dailies in EVENTS or PROJECTS?

2. The workspace must be a Project, therefore you create a Project everytime you want to organize clips. After you're done editing you export the video to a appropriate video file and THEN Save > Master File... > Finder

3. At which point the Master File contains JUST the clips that were used in that Project.

4. Why delete the project then? It's just a bunch of links so it takes up no space. At the very least you could add a 'Z' to the beginning to sort them at the end, right?

Perhaps I'm not understanding the basics of how the FCPX organiziation was intended to be used?

Thanks for your time on this one!

So I just tested the File > Share > Master File... and this actually produces a .MOV with the sum total of the clip sizes. It does not preserve anything at all, it bakes the clips together.

I fail how to see how this is at all a viable alternative to Projects, which are essentially links to files in the Events, which exist separately from the exported Master File .MOV.

If the SUM TOTAL of the clips in a Project equals 30TB, a Master FIle will be 30TB. Now you have 60TB.

What's the advantage of a Master File if it's just a .MOV over a Project?

Again, I'm new at this and just trying to understand the design decision (from a software design perspective) with regards to this process.

If you want to Save a Project and come back to edit it later, right click the Project icon and select Duplicate Project as Snapshot.

This is different to Duplicate Project.

It allows you to come back and start editing from the point the Snapshot was created even if the original Project has been altered,

Maybe think "Save AS" if we are talking Word Processing.

And yes the Snapshot is a small file replicating the decision list rather than duplication real media files.

Strongly suggest a training course such as macProVideo to understand the full workflow.

Also, these may or may not help, both parts 1 and 2.

What you need to do is forget how you used to think about and use Events and Projects. Libraries give us "more" options for media management. Projects always had a Default Event. The connection is just more solid now. Simply re-think your management. If you're working on one production, and have 900 events, something is wrong with your media management plan. Rethink how your organizing. Maybe fewer Events, more Keyword/Smart Search collections.

Most all of the member in my local FCP users group, once they wrap their heads around what a Library is, are actually liking it better now.

Hey Ben,

I've watched that one already and it's quite good, thanks for the recommendation

I'm trying to understand how to organize it, but if a project is the central unit of work it follows that having them all visible is important. Do you not agree?

I'm completely open to changing the way I work here, I just don't want it to feel like I'm going backwards and losing functionality as a result of updating. Does that make sense?

So again, how is not being able to view all projects, and having projects three levels down by default conducive to an efficient workflow?
