Q: Key Chain

Since the latest update i get asked all the time to enter my key chain password as various software wants to access it. How can I avoid this?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

A:

Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.

If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.

Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.

I'm not sure as I'm a simple user.... I get asked from Mail, Calendar and other software to type my Key Chain password to allow them access. This happens over and over!

I have tried the Key Chain first aid repair with no luck. I have read on a different forum that I should delete a folder containing the Key Chain passwords and then reboot but that did not worked either!

This only happens since the latest OS Mavericks update!

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your reply! I have 2 boxes there. One that states the amount of time to wait during inactivity until the key chain is protected. The other box when checked will protect the Key Chain when my Mac goes to sleep.

Does this mean that the kex Chain will not be protected any more (and therefore can be hacked) if I uncheck them?

Provided that you lock the screen with your password or log out whenever you leave the computer unattended, there should be no problem.

Unfortunately it di not help! Mail and Safari asked my already again a few times for the Key Chain Password in the space of five minutes.

It must have something to do with the latest OS Update as it only happens since then. There is varous German forums describing the same problem for other users but unfortunately without any solutions....

Back up all data. Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to keep or delete the keychain items. Choose to delete and confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device. Test.
