I've seen accessories for dual SIM card adapters and would like to know if it's possible to switch from one card to another in the software?
I would like to have a phone for home and one for work, switching from one to the other, I don't however want the alternative - which is two phones.
I just wanted to know if iOS recognises a dual SIM setup, perhaps can even switch based on time of day and geo-fencing?

There are kits on eBay to do this right now, compatible with the latest 5S iPhone, did iOS ever support this feature in any of it's previous incarnations?

No. iOS does not now, and never has supported any kind of dual SIM configuration.
That's irrelevenat. The iPhone doesn't support any kind of dual SIM configuration. If you want to buy something from ebay and try it out, that's your business. It's not supported by Apple at all.
I'll suggest it, I think the geofencing/time specific thing's a good idea.
