how to close all open apps

Okay, I know how to close a single app, but when there are 20 of them open, and iOS7 apps become sluggish as all heck, how can I close all of them at once? It takes far too long to close them one-at-a-time.

Not true, many apps are still active in the background. Sure, music, but also clocks, mail (always checking for new mail). The reason to close the apps is to free up resources. If too many are running, for example (which was my case earlier today) Pages crawls to a near halt. It took 2 minutes for Pages to recognize a select, and I couldn't move the selection point any further than it was. Closed all the running apps (iTunes wasn't running) and voila, I could select and type without any problems. This seems to have started with iOS 7, or at least it became more noticlbe with 7, I never had a problem with 6.

From my research, Mike is correct. For example, Siri & micrphone in apps will often not work if too many apps are in the background instead of closed completely.

Further, "background app refresh" (on for all apps by default) lets apps like GPS, iAds, Diagnostics and Usage, Calendar, Email, etc fetch information from servers and satellites. This uses battery power, CPU & memory in the background. However, you can turn background app refresh off for each app, but be careful. If you're using a navigation app and you're switching back and forth between it and for example, a music app, you probably want to leave background app refresh on for the navigation app..

Mike, I've searched extensively and found no way to fully close all apps without doing it app by app..

I came here searching the same answer and I'm disappointed there doesn't seem to be a more efficient solution. I work at a public library and we have 8 iPads in the kids section where we routinely have to close down all the running apps. It often gets to the point where there are so many apps open, you can't even open another one. I can close all the apps fairly fast by swiping away for 30 seconds, but multiply that by 8 ipads (and daily), this turns into a big timesuck.

Actually, thinking about that, your not right. Possibly fully, possibly partially.

Mail runs in the background, because the inbox count goes up.

iTunes runs in the background, because I can listen to music while I respond to this.

Wordpress runs in the background, notifying me when someone has liked one of my blogs.

Audio recording runs in the background, I can record a meeting while I am using Pages to type notes.

GPS runs in the background, letting me know when a turn is coming up, even though I have iTunes running.

So, there are apps that continue to run, even though they've been closed.
