Buying a sealed, unopened iPad

I'm about to buy a sealed, unopened iPad mini WIFI ONLY on Craigslist!
The guy says he received it as a gift so he doesnt have the receipt.
Here is the thing: Should I worry it is a factory sealed stolen iPad? If it is a factory sealed, unopened and wifi only stolen iPad, can the police track me down? This version is just WIFI ONLY, so can the carriers do anything?
The deal is so good, I can save $50! Please help me out!!!

If he doesn't have a receipt, then it could be stolen, and I'm not going to get into whether or not you could get away with purchasing stolen goods. And just because the box is shrinkwrapped doesn't mean that the iPad is new, or even that there's an iPad in the box. It's easy to re-wrap a box, which may have an iPad or, as has happened, a block of wood.

If you want to save $50 (or more, depending on the model you choose), buy a refurbished iPad from Apple.

Then you don't have to worry, and will get a full 12-month warranty. Buying from someone you don't know on Craigslist is just begging to be cheated.

Regards.
