Need help as to what the fn key does?

It's just another key that allows you to use more options on the keyboard. For example on games where you have to use the F1-F0 buttons, you would use the FN key to use those rather than sound and brightness.
It's used as a modifier key in conjunction with another character key http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343
If you have enabled Keyboard Viewer and Character Palette in your System Preference settings, you can see what keys on the keyboard will change into if you utilize the modifier key 'fn' and this may help to see the options or where odd characters you may not otherwise know, are hiding out.
