the 70d requires Mavericks
Thanks, but I'm sorry, what is Mavericks?
OS X 10.9. You need it as well as Aperture 3.5.

Mavericks is the latest OS just released by Apple. Your profile indicates you are running 10.7.5 which is Lion.
What is the model of your System? Did you not upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8) because your system would not run or for some other reason. If it was because you could not run 10.8 then you will not beable to run 10.9.

Thanks! This is very helpful. To be honest I did not upgrade to 10.8 just because never had a reason to, my bad.
I have 10.7.5, it appears I should be able to upgrade to10.9 first, then upgrade my Aperture to 3.5? Is that the right sequence? I have Aperture 3.4.5 now.
It doesn't appear from what I read that other Apps shoudl be affected that ran on 10.7.5, they should rn fine on 10.9? Is that your experience? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just lost right now, I got this camera and I wasn't expecting a compatibility issue, not with MAC :-( I hope I can work through it, thanks again for al lyour advice.
My lap top is a Mac Book(Not Pro) w/4 gig ram, and it as purchased in mid 2009, I am pretty sure it should be able to run 10.9.

Here are the Tech Specs for Aperture 3.5.1:
http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/
You can see for yourself, if your MacPro can handle it.
And the Relese Notes will tell you the differences between the versions:
Aperture 3.4.5 running on OSX 10.8.5 reads the Canon 70D RAW file just fine. Mavericks is not required.
Are you sure about that? The 70d does not show up in the list of supported cameras, OS X Mountain Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats
In any case if the OPs system can run ML it can run Mavericks. Mavericks is free, ML would have to be bought even if you could still get it which I do not believe you can anymore.
Yes. I got my 70D in October and I've run about 1500 images through Aperture. The info pane shows Canon 70D and identifies the lens more or less correctly 🙂
Canon 70D is on the Aperture Raw Support List:
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
EOS 70D***
*** Requires Aperture 3.4 or later
Interesting that it does not show up in the ML list.
But anyway As I wrote if the OP has Lion going to Mavericks is free and getting ML is not possible at least through normal channels.
Ok now I'm really confused just looked at the requirements for 3.4 and it says it runs on Lion. So if the OP has Lion and 3.4.5 whys is the camera not being recognized?
Just checked the Raw list for Lion shows the 70d in 4.08 but the list for ML does not show the camera at all.
??
4.08
Wasn't that one of the problematic raw updates, that caused all kinds of problems and was quickly replaced by an update?
Here is the update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1674
Post Date: Aug 22, 2013
So Jorge should simply try to install this upgrade.
Thanks Leonie and everyone, the "DL1674" patch fixed everything, I can now open my RAW files from my 70D using Aperture 3.4.5 and OS X 10.7.5. I still feel I should upgrade to 10.9Maverick, but will I have to upgrade Aperture as well? Can I just stay at 3.4.5.? I hope 10.9 is not going to force me to upgrade iMovie and things like Aperture, do you know if that's the case?
Thanks again!
Upgrading the OS usually involves some pain; losing support for old devices, application glitches, things changing from how you are used to, etc.
Not upgrading the OS usually involves some pain; No support for new devices, no access to application flixes, no access to the new features, etc.
So it's really just a pain management exercise of when to take your pain!
I always make a bootable clone of my system disk, boot from it, upgrade the OS on that at see how much pain it gives me before deciding whether to upgrade my system for real.
The built in Apps (like Mail, Safari, etc) get upgraded with the OS, but other Apps can be upgraded at your leisure. The problem you may face is if the App doesn't work well on the new OS, you may be forced to update the App to get full compatibility. Aperture 3.4.5 seems to work ok on OS 10.9 but it's probably worth searching the forum to see if anyone has any issues with the combination that may affect you.

In the cases, where the new Mavericks versions are very different and do not yet offer the full support like the older versions, the installer moved the older version of the app to a subfolder of applications.
If you see that happen, don't uninstall the older version. In these cases both versions are compatible with the system, e.g. the iWork apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), iMovie, GarageBand. Some new applications are still under developement, e.g. iWork: About the new iWork for Mac: Features and compatibility
