I am trying to send a text to a short number code and as I enter the number in contacts 474 shows as 4 74 so it just won't send
Is anyone able to help me please.

You might try changing Settings > General > International > Region Format to see if that helps.
It probably won't save in contacts since it is not a standard 10-digit phone number. The iPhone saves numbers in contacts based on regional settings, so it is not an expected entry. you may not be able to do it, since contacts would probably attempt to enter a country code in the front of it as well.
As sberman said, create it by typing the short code in, and then do not delete that from the Messages app. You could also try to just add it in the notes field of the phone company's contact if you like, see if that will allow you to copy and paste the number, but based on what I said earlier regarding regional settings, you cannot add the number without the formatting.
I tried the copy and paste but still no luck. I am going to take my phone to the shop I get them to sort it. I seems like something so simple as there are a lot of short codes that are in use. I just bought this iPhone 4s yesterday to replace my android. Hmmm

Do not be disappointed if the "shop" cannot sort it out. Again, the formatting of numbers in the contacts app is handled by your regional settings. Short codes are not designed to be saved in a phone number formatted contact card.
Yes that's what I'm guessing but it is the short code number of the phone company whom I bought the phone from. I phoned them and they said to ask apple. So silly
Do not enter the short number in contacts. Simply enter it directly in the "To" field of the text message you create.
Again, create a new message then type "474" in the "To" field.
SBerman, I tried as you suggested and just when I thought it had worked, it said not delivered. I Thad converted the number to 4 74.
