My iPad will show up in my computer, but will not show up in iTunes.

I have windows 8 and the latest software of iTunes on my computer. When I plug my iPad in, it shows up in my computer, but it will not show up in iTunes. I have tried everything besides resetting my iPad from the troubleshoot guide on the apple website. My mom just got an iPad mini for christmas and iTunes will not recognize her iPad either. I don't know what else to do.
