I've just purchased an iPad and want to share documents from my Mac to my iPad. HOWEVER, when I go on my iPad's iCloud, the mac does not show up as a shared device?
Any ideas as to why this may be? And how to resolve it?

You could only share files via iCloud on an app by app basis and it only works, if the app actually offers you an opportunity to save files on iCloud.
E.g. you could create a new Pages document in the Pages app on your iPad and then could open this file in Pages on the Mac and continue working.
I tried to share a document this way, but it wouldn't allow me because the mac is not paired with my iPad. I've put in the same apple ID and tried turning iCloud off then on again but to no avail. Do you know why this might be? If I want to do a general back up it just won't allow me, and I need this safety net for my work!
You would need to install the latest version of Pages in order to sync the files between your iPad and Mac.
What happens, if open "Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup" and press the button "backup now"?
When I did the backup on my iPad, it backed up the iPad and iPhone but didn't even touch my mac
You cannot backup a Mac on iCloud, you could only backup iOS devices.
