Q: Can't open Aperture

When rying to open Aperture on my Macbbok I keep getting this advisory:

There was an error opening the database for the library “/Volumes/TOSHIBA External HD/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.

and the window then tells me to quit Aperture.

This problem began only a week ago and I have no idea why it now fails to work.

Anyone have any information that might help?

I have over 20,000 (yes .. twenty thousand) photos on this external hard drive

and need to recover them ASAP.

Thank you in advance if you can help.

I use a Macbook Pro , OSX 10.7.5

I use Aperture 3 but can't tell you the program number because I can't get it to

run long enough to get the info from the "about" page.

Look below the Aperture icon in the Applications folder, while viewing "Applications" in column mode :

What happened a week ago? Did you import new photos? Install other software or upgrade software?

Does Aperture launch, if you hold down the shift-key while launching Aperture? Try that, please.

When you see the error message, is there a panel with an error log? Can you please copy and paste the first 50 lines from that panel and paste them into your next post?

    Hi Leonie:

As for downloading new programs etc. answer is no.

As for photos, yes, a few but didn't put them in my aperture library. They are still

    in the iPhoto library.

I tried opening Aperture using the shift key at the same time, same problem.

Here is the snapshot of the Applications folder but I can't access the info you're looking

for .... my screen looks somewhat different than yours.

Problem is .. when I select Aperture icon to get the additional info, it tries to open the program and I get that

same advisory that I get all the time.

Have you tried repairing the library? Hold the command and control keys down as you start Aperture and run Repair library

O.K., at least we now know your Aperture version - 3.4.5.

And the test with the "Shift" key shows, that it is probably not a bad imported image.

I'm kind of at my wits end about this. I'm no great computer whiz at the best of times

but usually I can figure out something that works, even if I'm not sure why it works.

Not this time.   Totally flumoxed !

Can you open any Aperture library at all - if you hold down the alt/opt key ⌥ while launching Aperture? Can you create a new library and work with it? Can you create a new library on your Toshiba drive and work with it?

    Hi:

When I use the alt/option key and try to open Aperture it gives me

a small window that asks which library I wish to access - the iPhoto or

the Aperture libray. When I choose the Aperture library, I get the

usual advisory telling me there i the problem cited above.

Aperture will access the iPhoo library with no problem ... but

when it comes to the Aperture library there seems to be an incompatability

between Aperture and the library .... I've no idea why.

Is there a way I can tell Aperture the route to connect to the library?

I've no idea how to get that info and direct Aperture to do that.

This seems to be a real conundrum.

What is the version of your Aperture Library? Can you see the version number below the icon like this?

    Screen Shot 2014-01-04 at 07.30.40MEZ.PNG

Aperture will access the iPhoo library with no problem ... but

when it comes to the Aperture library there seems to be an incompatability

between Aperture and the library .... I've no idea why.

It can either be the library or your Toshiba drive. That is why I asked, if you can read any library on that drive. Is your iPhoto library also on your Toshiba drive?

When I use the alt/option key and try to open Aperture it gives me

a small window that asks which library I wish to access - the iPhoto or

the Aperture libray. When I choose the Aperture library, I get the

usual advisory telling me there i the problem cited above.

From that panel use the button "Craete New" and create a new library on your drive. Add a few test photos. Does that work?

Check the format of that drive and the permissions.

Select your Toshiba drive in the sidebar and use the command "File > Get Info".

In the "General" brick you can see the format, and in the "Sharing& Permissions" brick the permissions. Enable the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" option, if it is available.

    Hi Leonie and Frank:

    Well, we're making some progress.

My version of the OS on this external hard drive is

    Mac OS extended.

    The Library is showing 3.4.5.

I did the create new trick as you suggested, and ended up with Aperture working but no photos at all.

I uploaded 96 new photos and Aperture worked exactly as it has in the past ... perfectly.

It seems that the HD worked as it should as well.

So, correct me if I'm wrong but it would seem that Aperture can't find the path to the old

Aperture library. The new one seems to be working fine and the panel asking options as to which

library I want (iPhoto or Aperture) only allows for those two choices ... no choice for the old library.

Now, before I actually started fooling around with all this, I downloaded (copied) the original aperture library to another external HD ... just in case I needed to get back to it - even though it might be corrupted.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed from here? I'd be most appreciative if I could get those photos back.

My old computer in Canada is an iMac and has Aperture 2 on it (I never upgraded the program) and it's library is backed up 5 ways from Sunday ... but none of the photos in my aperture 3 library (old or new) will play on the Ap 2.  I would rather not upgrade the old iMac until I know I can access the old aperuture 3 library. Why screw with something that works?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    mike

So, correct me if I'm wrong but it would seem that Aperture can't find the path to the old

    Aperture library.

If it were only the path to the library, openeing it by double-clicking the library would help. When you tried to open it, did you click the library or the Aperture application?

Also, when you tride the Shift-key variation? Try to open the library by directly clicking the library, not the application. Also try the Library First Aid this way, click the Library, while holding down the ⌥⌘-key combination, until you are seeing the First Aid panel.

    So now we know,

    • that your drive is correctly formatted MacOS X Extended,
    • that the library version is 3.4.5 and the Aperture version as well
    • What are the permissions on the drive? Do you have read/write access? If you move your new Aperture library to that drive, can Aperture work with it?

If directly clicking the library does not help, launch aperture on the new library and try to import the ols library into the new one: File > Import > Library.

Okay .... let me get this straight ..... the permissions on the drive are such that I have full access to read and write.

The new aperture drive is on the Toshiba external drive. The old library is on the other back up external HD.

So your suggestion is to import the old library from the back up HD to the Toshiba and into the new library.

    Is that correct?

And exactly which keys refer to the "⌥⌘-key combination". I have the "" key but no idea what the other one is.

At this point I'll try anything that sounds logical.

    Thanks again         ...M...

    "⌥⌘-key combination"

The ⌥-key is labelled on some keyboards als alt-key or option-key.

If you have not yet tried the Repair or rebuild by clicking directly ont the library, try that first:

click the Library, while holding down the ⌥⌘-key combination, until you are seeing the First Aid panel.

Then select all repair options and rebuild  in turn.

Only if that should fail, rebuild the library by importing it into the new, empty library on your external drive.

I suggested the OP do a repair a few days ago and the response was

Hi again: I tried Frank's suggestion but still get the same outcome.

So were the steps in the Aperture Troubleshooting doc followed? Was a repair tried  and if that failed a rebuild ?

This all seems overly complicated. It is rare that a repair/rebuild will not fix the problem originally reported.

    Hi again folks;

I followed the suggested course of actions and on one occasion came up with the window telling my "Library needed upgrading" .... but I tried to find the upgrade download at Apple and couldn't locate it.

Tried the other repair/rebuild suggestions as well and in all cases the Aperture program eventually opened but no photos could be found. It's like the entire DB has disappeared.

Under info, the library shows 90.9 MB of data. Seems to me thats not all that many photos if you use

16mb jpg camera (larger files than the norm) ... which I do. Also had a few (very few) raw data photos as well as some mpegs. There should be some 20,000 photos on this HD .... so any idea where they went?
