touchpad not working

The mouse-pointer was moving, but clicking was not possible on the trackpad.

Resetting SMC as described by dominic23 helped me.

Turn the mac off, plug in the power source. Turn it on. Simultaneously hold down the left side's shift control option keys. I have no idea why this worked for me, but it did.

Assuming you've tried the basic things, like rebooting, you're right in heading to the Apple store. Worst case, your trackpad is bad and has to be replaced. I wouldn't get a new computer for just that. If you're under warranty or Applecare, the repair is free anyway.

I am seeing the exact same problem. Randomly, the pointer moves but gestures (like click - single tap) do not work.

The only thing that seems to cure it is to connect the blue tooth mouse.

Shutdown does not seem to fix it.

I think dominic23's soulution is just plain silly.

I have an appointment coming up so I will ask a ""genius"" about it.

Apple is to some degree claiming it is software and it will be fixed.

Of course they never admit things our right, but the tried to convince me not to go to the apple store, hinting it was software...

Dominic's suggestion was part of the troubleshooting process and was worth doing. Your choice if you don't follow it of course, but it could fix trackpad problems in some cases.
