why does my brother printer say"pinter in use"?

I have set up my new Brother HL-3170 CDW on my home network. My Mackbook Pro finds it, i have added it as a printer. When I try to print to it I get a message that the printer is in use. there are no other jobs on the printer. Help.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I have the same trouble with an older Brother printer. Anytime, you don't know why, the printer appears 'in use'. The only solution I founded is to manually reboot the printer, then print my document again (sometimes it works without having to reprint).

Did you set your printer network address as a fix address? Once I didn't, and everytime I rebooted the router, I had to reconfigure the printer on my computers, for it changed address...

It sems to be a brother trouble, as on other machines (linux), it's worse 😁

Re-booting did not help.

My Brother HL-3170 CDW became defective after five months of good service (I had no printing problems and no "printer not available" during that time) auntil I received a replacement printer. It is only from the set up of the replacement printer that I now have the problem. I have not been able to print through my network at all.

I am still having the problem after several month, except, my printer goes off line for no apparant reason. If I leave it alone it will eventually come back on line and print whatever is in the que. It may take five minutes or several hours but it reconnects to my Wifi and prints. Cutting the printer off and on does not help. All of my computers and other devices are still on line when the printer drops off, so it is not my router or modem.

I did move the printer to a different place in the room and it seemed to reduce the number of times it drops off. (My printer is two rooms away from my router.) I read somewhere that other signals could knock it off line (other devices, microwave ovens, flourescent lights, etc.) but it dropped off line last night when there was no activity in my house.

My next move is to move it near the router, which is very inconvenient and defeats the idea of wireless.

I had this situation as well and had spent many fruitless hours trying to hook up my printer. However, I spent about 30 minutes on the chat today. There were a couple of settings that were off - plus I needed a very specific way to install the new driver and set up. Once that was done, I easily was able to get all four computers able to print with ease. Almost was ready to throw in the towel!

Had to make sure to set the IP address of the printer and use the driver with the ending CUPS which could be downloaded at Brother. The set up wizards let me down. The Chat Line person helped me through it.

Patience and tenacity rule.
