Q: I can't uncheck Backup without encryption, although I've never set a password.

Hello there,

I'm trying to backup my iPhone for the first time and I want to do it without encryption. The problem is that when I try to uncheck the encryption, iTunes is asking me for the password.

I've never set a password and I'm kind of stuck. Any ideea why, any solutions?

Many thanks

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

    Hello Horax,

The following article provides some possible items worth trying in an attempt to toggle this option.

    Hello Allen,

Many thanks for your reply. I'm really puzzled to be honest, I've tried all the passwords I'm using: Apple ID pass, computer pass ... none of them works.

This is driving me crazy as I've never did a backup and whenever I'm trying to uncheck the encryption it's asking for the pass.

    Cheers,

    Horax

    Many thanks Allen,

I'll try to find a solution on Apple's support, altghough I fear there's no obvious solution to my issue. Which actually I don't think is my issue but an iTunes bug. Why should I be forced to use encryption if I don't want to.

Anyway, many thanks for taking your time.

    All the best,

    Horax

Hey glad (but sad) I'm not the only one whos been totally REAMED by this horrible bug in their logic for the UX for Iphone backing-up...

Its enough to make you want to freak out because you could potentially lose years of data while simultaneously going through the very motions Apple has provided the user with.

I completely agree guys. did either of you ever find a fix?

You could go through a good amount of time backing up "encrypted" backups without EVER having to have entered a password... Then when you finally need to restore your phone for whatever reason, you are prompted to enter a password HAVING NEVER ENTERED A PASSWORD. The SCREEN DOESN'T ACCEPT A NULL VALUE TO PROCEED.

    Seriously?

    Seriously?

And BTW! I hate how some people just equate this to forgetting a password... totally different. I saw the ability to proceed with "encryption"' without needing a password at that moment.

The prompt reads something like "if you ever forget this password then you will perminantly be unable to retrieve the data" so if i could proceed without using a password then of course I did, I'll pick it later. Well it lets you proceed at THAT point without a password, but then if you ACTUALLY NEED to restoref from a backup is when you find out that you don't know "the password". See, the thing is, that it doesn't let you go forward without text in the the text box. basically, a null field doen't give you the option to proceed with "enetering the password" (because there isn't any!)

Notice how you need to enter the password to change restore or to actually restore from backup?

Notice how you don't need to enter a password to start an encryption? ACTUALLY DONT DO THAT BECAUSE THE SAME THING MIGHT HAPPEN TO YOU!

You are basically stuck in a loop where you never put in a password so theres nothing to forget.

There's no way to go forward without entering a value.

Tried taking name of backup and searching through keychain... nothing shows up because there is no value... BECAUSE ITS NOTHING!

SO FRUSTRATING! THIS CANNOT END LIKE THIS APPLE COME ON DO SOMETHING!

Was on tech support for 4 hours trying to figure this out, he's stumped! going to talk to the engineers tomorrow, hopefully please God somebody figure this SH## out!
