Jan 3, 2014 2:05 PM in response to ClausDKby Joseph Kriz,Let me see if I got this straight.
Airport Extreme is the main base station.
Time Capsule is wired to the Airport Extreme creating a "Roaming" network.

The above works just fine?
Where, and how, are the Express units connected?
Wireless, or wired to any of the above?
Let us know further details.

Jan 3, 2014 2:34 PM in response to Joseph Krizby ClausDK,Yes, I believe it is a roaming network I have setup. And this works fine.
Both AX's are then connected wireless with an "extend a wireless network" setting. Both AX's will connect to the TC base station, but none of them to the AE base station.

How do you know which one the AX is conneting to?
The Extreme and the Time Capsule have the same network name. Correct?
So the AX would just extend the one network name.
Wi-Fi network (AE,TC) ----------> wireless extended AX
Are you trying to put the AX in between the Airport Extreme and the Time Capsule?
I don't think that will work.
Maybe someone else here can help you further as I do not have the wired Roaming network to test at this time.

Jan 3, 2014 11:44 PM in response to Joseph Krizby ClausDK,Two reasons I know which one it is trying to connect to
1. I look at the diagram that airport utility provide
2. as the AE and TC are at opposite end of the house, and the AEs too I dont get a connection when in proximity to the AE, but i do get when in proximity to the TC
Although all devices are n type, does it matter that the AE is 5th generation and the AE only 2nd?

What generation is your Time Capsule?
The Airport Extreme is capable of simultaneous 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
The Airport Express (AX) you have is not simultaneous bands. It is one or the other.
I am not sure about your TC.
The first generation does not have simultaneous.
I just retired 3 of my 1st generation Airport Express units so now my entire system is simultaneous dual band.
Funny, my Airport Utility, 6.3.2, does not show the AX unit connected to the main base station.
What system are you running?
What version of Airport Utility?
The older version of Airport Utility would show me where the AX units were connected to but that no longer works in Mavericks, 10.9

Disregard the above statement.
I was thinking Clients, not base stations.
Yours would look like this then with your Extreme and your Time Capsule connected via ethernet.
Solid line between the two devices.
And then when you hook up both Express units you have a dotted line between both of them to the TC ?
I am curious as to what generation your TC is.
Can you also show us a diagram of your setup like I show above?

Jan 5, 2014 4:10 AM in response to Joseph Krizby Joseph Kriz,I re-read your first post and missed that you do in fact state you have a 1st generation TC.
That is not simultaneous dual band. The 1st generation AX is also not simultaneous dual band.
That may be part of your problem but not positive.
What generation is the other AX you just purchased?
If it is the newest 2nd generation, I would try putting it in the place of your TC temporarily and see if you could get the other AX to connect to the Extreme.
That way both base stations with the simultaneous dual bands would be your Roaming network.
Then try the AX 1st generation and the TC 1st generation as your wireless extenders.
Worth a try.
If not, mabye someone else can be of further help to you.
Good Luck and keep us informed.
