Hangs on permissions repair

When I choose "Repair Permissions" in the disk utility window, the system hangs at 1 minute remaining. I verified the disk and it showed no problems, but I am unable to verify or repair the disk permissions. This is a new imac that came with Mountain Lion installed, not an upgrade.

Not sure what to try next.
