Q: Why can't I "Gift this app" (Aperture) to a friend on the Mac App Store?

I am trying to gift an app (Aperture photo software) to my girlfriend similar to how one would gift a movie or album on the itunes store.  I'm pretty sure this option existed at one point on the Mac App Store, however I see no option for it any longer...

Any clue why?

It has never existed in the Mac App Store. It exists in the iTunes App Store and you may gift iOS apps.

As I plainly stated before, you may gift iOS apps from the iTunes App Store, which is exactly what the link and the screen shots in the link demonstrate.

You may not gift apps from the Mac App Store and have never at any time in the history of the MAS been able to gift apps.

Understood. The text "find the item in the APP STORE or iTunes Store that you wish to gift" is a little on the confusing side for those less familiar with the differences between App Store and "MAS."  I wonder why this task is not possible to do...  there are probably many who would gift this software to others.   Must be to ensure the downloader has the proper hardware for the app.

I think that you aren't understanding that there is a difference in the apps on a Mac and the apps on an iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, there is one iTunes app and all the possible content is accessible to buy from this one app; music, videos, books, apps and games, etc. But on an iOS device there are separate apps; iTunes Store for music and videos, App Store for apps & games, iBooks for books, etc. So the App Store spoken of in the Knowledge Base article about iTunes is the App Store app on an iOS device.
