The difference is that if you purchase Applecare within the first 90 days from date of purchase, you will be entitled to free telephone support throughout the Applecare term. If you do not purchase Applecare during the first 90 days from date of purchase, you will not get the free telephone support until you do purchase Apple care.

I once considered Applecare for that specific reason and that is why it popped into my mind when I read the post. I trust that my contrary answer was not meant in any way a criticism of your response. Regarding its importance, that is to be determined by each individual. For me it is now moot since I did not purchase Applecare.
