transfer songs to my new ipod

I ticked the songs i wanted on my new ipod but somehow all the songs transferred over. The discussion threads on delete songs say to uncheck but these songs that I didn't want don't have a check mark next to them. I have no idea how they got on nor how to get them off. What should I do? Thanks
