Stopping synchronizing of song ratings

Hi:

I have 4 different devices (iPhones and iPods) that sync to my iTunes. These are used by different family members at different times. Sometimes the users change the ratings on songs and these are synchronized back to iTunes.

I have smart playlists that use ratings so when these change, it messes up the smart playlists.

How can I stop ratings from synchronizing from the device to iTunes? Or, how can I make a one-way sync with some device and two-way with others?
