Bluetooth will not recognize wireless numeric keypad

I have MBpro retina display laptop. The Maverick OS is up to date. I purchased a LMP wireless numeric keypad to use with the computer. The Bluetooth recognized the mouse but not the keypad. The example of the bluetooth preferences in the Apple troubleshooting website is different from the Bluetooth preference on my MBpro. The bluetooth example has features that would help to connect the keypad, but are missing on my computer. I have two questions: Why are the Bluetooth preferences different and any suggestions why I am unable to connect the keypay?
