I had about 600 songs in iTunes, many that were downloaded from old CD's. They have been in my iTunes for years, and now all of the sudden, most of them are just gone???!!!

Have you been moving things or renaming folders related to theiTunes folder in your Music folder? If so, put them back. iTunes uses a list of file locations to present your music listing and if you change file locations the list is no longer valid and you get !
No. ITunes did this to me too. It happened through an update. Any ideas how to undo it?
Key Command-Space at the same time, and you'll get the Spotlight search window. Enter the same of an artist or band you remember being on your machine. That's one way you can find out where the songs have ended up.
If you use iTunes to organize your content, another solution is almost as easy. Your profile says you have an iMac. Go to (your library)/Music/iTunes/Tunes Music/ - and all your mp3s should he there.
