how do i stop maverick download?

I started downloading Maverick before reading negative reviews. Download is currently paused; how do I stop it from continuing to download?

You do not have to stop it: when it is downloaded fully, it will ask you if you want to install it, just say NO. The downloaded installer is in the Applications folder, move it to a backup folder for later use.

The negative news is that some people did not researched what the differences are after installing it, or they had a not good working OS and did not solve this before installing Mavericks.

When you have a good working system without issues and without crap software installed, and you know what is different in Mavericks, then Mavericks is a big step forward.

Thank you for the list:

a. The hardware OK for Mavericks.

b. TimeMachine backups excellent.

c. A number of items that could cause trouble when upgrading to Mavericks. And a few that are already better to loose when running MLion.

I like you to run DiskUtility and do a "verify disk" : the disk is at least 5 yrs old. If that is OK, we go on. If not do the "repair disk", and we have to decide what to do first.

1. You have to uninstall the RIM/Blackberry software. You can not have it anymore in Mavericks, and it is already wrong to have it in MLion.

2. You have to uninstall Airprintactivator, when you need such app, you can download Handyprint (same thing, other name) that is compatible with Mavericks, after Mavericks is installed and proven OK.

3. When you still use HP equipment, check if all apps/tools HP you have are the latest version, if not update; when you do not use HP equipment anymore uninstall everything that is HP.

4. Unless you have absolutely need for Java, uninstall Java.

5. Go to /SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/ Login items tab: remove all double entries that are there (Kies...., Palm..., Sugar..., and so on), you do that with the minus sign underneath.

Now restart the mac, and run a new etrecheck list to post here: we are not ready by a long way!

Very good: note now the free ram at the bottom of the list compared to the earlier list!

We go on.

General note: there are three "LaunchAgents" folders: one is yourname/Library/LaunchAgents/, second is MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchAgents/ and third is MacintoshHD/System/Library/LaunchAgents/

there are two "LaunchDaemons" folders: one is MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/, second is MacintoshHD/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/

be very careful in there, especially in the System/Library/.

Run TimeMachine to backup changes until now.

0. Java: we are going to make it harmless:

in SystemPreferences click the Java Applet, in the "security" tab uncheck "enable java content in the browser"

1. Remnants that are still there (rim still there also), remove:

in MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/ delete com.rim.BBDaemon.plist

and while there also delete com.sharpcast.xfsmond.plist

and also delete com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist

2. in MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchAgents/ delete com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist

and also com.rim.BBLaunchAgent.plist

(the Java plists will be remade when you activate java later-- only when absolutely necessary).

3. You have to uninstall Sugarsync / CaddieSyncExpress / AndroidFileTransferAgent / PalmDesktop Software /

Remove these also from SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems...

4. If necessary update Pages to the latest version.

5. I don't know what Kies.... is but I advise to uninstall these softwares (and remove from the LoginItems).

6. MacintoshHD/Library/InternetPlugins/: delete DirectorShockwave SkyCaddiePlugIn Gears GarminGpsControl

Yourname/Library/InternetPlugins: delete GarminGpsControl

7. When you do not use CanonImageGatewayDL delete it from the MacintoshHD/Library/InternetPlugins/ also.

8. Last qusetion: my question about HP equipment still unanswered.

Now restart the mac and make another etrecheck list, I will answer that one tomorrow morning.

Good job. Looks much better now.

- Now about this:

VZAccess Manager.app I assume you need that, can you check if it is Mavericks compatible?

TransportMonitor, same.

- And about Mavericks:

the main difference is that syncing with iDevices is different: Calendar and Contacts are not synced anymore through iTunes, but via iCloud, you have to read about that a little before upgrading.

Also because of the advanced memory handling and efficiency, it will be frustrated by so called optimizers, cleaning tools, speedboosters, keepers and so on. Never install those.

Now we go for Mavericks, yes:

I take it that you have it downloaded completely and stored it in a backup location.

Copy it to the Applications folder, you can use the backup later to make a bootable stick with Mavericks, to install Mavericks on a second computer without having it to download again.

Doubleclick the installer in the Applications folder and let Mavericks install.

After the install is complete, the mac restarts and the installer is gone.

So easy.

If you want, I will explain how to simply make a bootable Mavericks USB stick (8GB stick) in the next post.

Have fun,

Lex

Ok, Lex, I installed Mavericks. Yay for me, huh?!!! I deleted VZNavigator and TransportMonitor, neither of which were needed for my user purposes. Once Mavericks was installed, the only file that came up as incompatible was flip4Mac. If it's anything I end up missing, I'll deal with it later. Thanks so much for all of your help!!!

how do i stop maverick download?
