Just received this printer, and am unable to have any success with it printing in color. I have downloaded drivers, and firmware from Brother that are for OSX 10.9. Also, the print quality is quite poor. Any suggestions what I should be looking for to resolve this? I feel like I am back in the 90's with Windows 3.1!

You need to go to the brother website and download the driver for your printer. I had the same problem, and resolved it just now. The driver for this particular printer is not a good match for any of the preinstalled printer drivers on os x.
Thank you so much - I was having the same printing problems even after downloading and installing the correct driver from the Brother web-site. However, once I removed the printer in System Preferences, and then added it back, it works perfectly!
First download and install the driver from Brother's website.
Then you need to remove the printer from your list of installed printers (System Preferences > Printers & Scanners) because it has automatically paired with Mac's generic driver. Add the printer back but make sure you select Brother's driver, not Mac's generic driver..
Try resetting the printing system, then add the printer again.
Brother HL-3170CDW won't print in color, has poor print quality. I have downloaded drivers, and firmware from Brother with no success.
