What does it mean when your Ipod is Offline?

I lost/got it stolen a week ago, and does it mean that someone erased it? It keeps saying that its not connected to the internet. So i maybe thought it was in my sisters car where i thought i left it. But now it keeps saying its not connected to the internet. Does it mean its still out there? Or that someone erased it?
