Best way to get footage from a Canon GL2 (mini DV) onto an external HD for editing at a later date?

I have a large box of DV tapes that I never look at or use. I want to eliminate them and the camera by putting it all on HDrive(s) to edit when I get around to it. What is the best way to do this? Obviously I can feed each one into imovie and save them one at a time. Is there another method? I have Mac Mini, lots of external HD's, appropriate firewire and Imovie. I do not have FCP or any other advanced software.

Your ideas and input would be appreciated. If Imovie is the way to go tips on setting key preferences or the like would also be great.
