Three computers don't have enough space to back up to the 1TB Time Capsule that we have. I recently bought a 1TB external USB drive. Is it possible to plug this drive into the Time Capsule with USB and use it as an additional backup disc (not merge the two disks, just use this one as a network connected storage device for backups).

Yes, that is fine..
The disk must be Mac OS journalled format.. HFS+ and you might need a powered hub to connect it due to issues with the low capability of the USB port in the TC.
