Are iPad mini smart covers reliable?

I would like to get a smart cover for my ipad mini but a lot of rumors are going around that they aren't worth it. I mainly use the smart cover on my iPad 3 for propping it up like a laptop would. Is it reliable in that sense?

Yes. The new smart cover is better (3 fold segments) and more stable then the old one with 4 fold segments.
